Rio de Janeiro is a city known for its cavalier approach to life. The city is serene and averagely populated. It is punctuated with some glorious monuments that allow great Rio sightseeing. It is known worldwide as the “Marvelous City”

It is smaller than Sao Paulo but holds capital importance in Brazil. Shanties and slums abound together with the skyscrapers. This makes the city prone to some serious crime however.

What to see in Rio?

There are plenty of answers to it. Christ the Redeemer, the majestic statue sitting on top of Corcovado, is one of the seven modern wonders. The Sugar Loaf Mountain provides very high and thrilling cable car ride. You have got two worthy beaches: Copacabana and Ipanema. Two of the world’s largest urban forests also frame the city.

Knowledgeable people may visit Rio museums, such as Museo de Indio, that holds a treasure of artifices and antiques.

Rio De Janeiro history

Rio de Janeiro has moved through centuries from hereditary capitanies to Portuguese hands, then to France and finally to locals in 1822.

When gold was founded in Minas Gerais, close to Rio, the population rose and free labor started. But with Sao Paulo growing wings, Rio lost some of its importance. The emergence of coffee plantation returned some glory to Rio. It finally turned to sugarcane and became the largest producer in the world.
